Expanding Your Horizons

Oct 2006 - Present / Web Design
Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) is a non-profit organization that encourages girls to learn about science, technology, engineering, and math. Day-long EYH conferences happen annually around the world.

Working with a team of Google volunteers
In Fall 2006 I joined a team of Google volunteers charged with redesigning the existing EYH website. We worked closely with the organization's Executive Director throughout the entire process.

An early challenge
Almost immediately we identified our biggest design challenge: the design of the site would have to be flexible enough to appeal to two distinct audiences, teenage girls and adults.

Early on we decided to split the site into two main sections: "For Girls" and "For Adults." This would allow us to create more tailored experiences for each audience.

From mood boards to PHP
I initially focused on the design of the "For Girls" section of the site, and started the design process by creating a mood board and concept exploration to help the team identify the look and feel we wanted to pursue moving forward.

As the project progressed I worked on the "For Adults" pages as well, implemented Google Checkout integration for the online store and conference registration features, and wrote a PHP dispatcher to control the rendering of each page.

Moving forward
I continue to work with the project team remotely, and we are now moving into a second redesign as of Fall 2009.
